Allergies!!!

Well, all of Major's many illnesses have been due to one thing... ALLERGIES!!! He has had cough after cough, a constant runny nose and a couple of ear infections!! Ugh! It is frustrating to wonder why in the world your child keeps getting sick. We are thankful, though, to finally have an official diagnosis from the pediatrician. She said that she has seen more patients this year due to allergy related issues than ever before. They put Major on Singulair (a once a day allergy pill). I am supposed to monitor how he does on this pill and keep a detailed record of his behavior. I hope it helps. I was just wondering if anyone else's 2 year old has been diagnosed with allergies and if so, are they on a daily medication for them? And, were there any side effects? I only like to use medicine as a last resort, so here we are... I just want him to feel better and get back to his old self.

When Kaylee was two we went for allergy testing because she was taking breathing treatments a lot due to congestion in her chest. The doctor wanted to rule out asthma. She was given Singulair to take daily. There were no side effects that I noticed. After about a year I took her off of Singulair just to see how she would do since the allergy tests showed only a few things that she was mildly alergic to. The doctor said to give it to her as needed. She has not taken it for about two years now and we have not had any problems. I do not know if any of that helps. I guess I am trying to say that it may be something Major can be taken off of eventually depending on the severity of his allergies. At least now you know what you are dealing with. Hopefully he will feel better now.

Carlie is on Singulair too. We have tried a couple of things for her (even over the counter stuff) and it just doesn't do the trick. Hers was also breathing related, due to reflux and chest colds. So, I think Singulair is used alot for that.

Kendyll is also on allergy medicine, but we're hoping to wean her off slowly now that she's had her tonsils out.

It's amazing how many kids are on allergy medicine...what is the deal with our environment??? Good luck with Major. I hope this helps him clear up all that junk! Poor guy.

Both Kellen and Charlie take Singulair each night; Charlie's had it coupled with Nasonex lately. We begin Singulair in September and continue through May, then break for those few months of lessened allergies (in Houston, anyway) before starting up again. Now that we know the "danger zone" months for the boys, it's helped knowing when to anticipate they'll need it again.

I hope it works beautifully for sweet little Major!

Julie

I hope Major feels better soon! I know how you feel about medication, but maybe it will help him. You can always stop giving it to him if it has an adverse effect on his behavior. Good luck! I hope your sweet boy is back to normal in no time.

Jonathan has been on some kind of medication since he was 6 months old. His is/was for breathing, allergies, and eczema (all related too). Most of them he's been able to be weaned off of and use as needed now. I'd encourage you to keep trying things to find what works best for Major and maybe see an allergist who can do testing and help you find what he's allergic to.
